Of all his numerous works, this will always be considered Grotius' magnum opus, the work upon which his reputation most solidly rests. It earned him the designation as the "father of international law." The two principal topics treated are the legal obligations of human societies including those that have sovereign power, and the procedure for enforcing such duties and punishing violations of law. War was regarded as a type of law enforcement procedure akin to judicial remedies. Ter Muelen & Diermanse, Bibliographie des ecrits imprimes de Hugo Grotius 605. (Inventory #: 65400)
