Brooklyn & London: Intercultural Publications / Hamish Hamilton, 1956. Whole numbers 1-7, 10, 11, 13-15 (12 numbers of sixteen published). Large octavo. Decorated wrappers. Plates and photographs. Crown of first spine bumped, some dustiness and light soiling to a few of the wrappers, three spines a bit darkened; a good lot. James Laughlin served as general editor, with guest editors for most issues (Malcolm Cowley, R. P. Blackmur, Hayden Carruth, Lionel Trilling, among others), and a large and stellar board of advisory editors. An ambitious undertaking, published in US, UK, French, German and Italian editions, showcasing current U.S. literature and criticism, visual arts, film, music, and commentary. The list of contributors is distinguished, but the Ford Foundation backing for the undertaking was the subject of some small measure of controversy. In this lot, #s1- 4, 6 and 10 are present in the UK format. Paul Rand and Alvin Lustig are credited with some of the wrapper designs. (Inventory #: WRCLIT76160)
