Fabulous eye candy! Catalogue from the exhibition held November 2005 to March 2006 in Siena."Siena and Rome are linked by a continuous interweaving of culture, politics, religion, and art, from antiquity to the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The she-wolf with the twins (a common symbol) and artists who traveled and worked on commissions in and between both cities, unite the two cities in a great arch of a continuous exchange of experiences. The exhibition aimed to reconstruct and illustrate this web of relationships and influences, with examples of approximately 170 works, including paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, jewelery and archival documents that illustrate this continuing process in historic, cultural, and political settings. The focus is on two great art patrons/collectors of Siena, Agostino Chigi (who entrusted Raphael with the decoration of many important Sienese buildings) and Giulio Mancini (who collected works by Caravaggio and Carracci), who maintained very close relations with Sienese artists active in both Siena and Rome. With 12 essays/sections by various scholars. Includes appendices. A beautiful book.
