(12), 356 pp. Folding chromolithographic map dated 1854, a few tables in the text; text spotted, map creased at the edges, map torn horizontally across from where it attaches at the gutter, this has been neatly repaired on the verso. Original blind-stamped red cloth, spine decorated and titled in gilt; binding square and tight, foot of spine chipped, head of spine softened, red of cloth rubbed off 1/3 up from foot of rear hinge, corners showing. Good. This copy contains the engraved map by George W. Colton, perhaps the best-known map of California in the eastern United States during the 1850s. "It was republished annually for a time, with little or no change." See: Wheat. Capron left New York City on April 23, 1853, passed through Nicaragua and on to California where he arrived in San Francisco on May 21st, as commercial agent for a number of mercantile houses in New York. During his mission, Capron "visited the principal cities and villages of the state.... He also traversed various parts of the mining regions, and sojourned with the miners, among their valleys and mountains." The second part reports on San Francisco, including sensational aspects the city. The third part discusses mines and miners, including mining techniques and social conditions. The final part is Capron's journal.
