Jefferson NC/London: McFarland & Company, Inc.. Near Fine. (c.2001). First Edition. Hardcover. 978-0-7864-1221-1 . (no dust jacket, as issued) [a trace of scuffing to rear cover, otherwise a nice clean unread book]. (color frontispiece; B&W photographs) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the title page: "To George, / Regards, / James / Arness." Memoir by the towering actor best remembered for his 20-year run as Marshal Matt Dillon on TV's "Gunsmoke," the assumption of which role, in 1955, pretty much brought his feature film career to a screeching halt. (It was no great shakes to begin with, although he was memorable in the title role in THE THING (1951), and as an FBI special agent battling giant mutant ants in THEM! (1954).) There are chapters devoted to his World War II experiences (including the Anzio landing in Italy in 1944, where he was wounded) and his working relationship with John Wayne during the early 1950s; the longest chapter is (of course) devoted to "Gunsmoke," with the remainder of his career (and life) breezed through in a 13-page chapter called "And Beyond." The last one-third of the book is essentially padding: longish remembrances of working with Arness by five of his professional collegues; brief snippets of commentary by various "Gunsmoke" guest stars; a lame selection of fan letters (mostly fan emails, actually, circa 2000; a list of his film and TV credits (titles-only, and with several errors); and a list of his honors and awards. Oh, yes, the introduction is by Burt Reynolds, who was a regular on "Gunsmoke" for 2-1/2 years. Signed by Author . (Inventory #: 22250)
