Ladies' Mistakes: Cupid's Changeling, A Stitch in Time, Love's Progress
by Laver, James; Lowinsky, Thomas (illustrator)
Bloomsbury: The Nonesuch Press, 1933. Deluxe limited first edition, one of 300 copies, of fashion historian James Laver's tribute to the mock-heroic satires of the eighteenth century, illustrated by Thomas Lowinsky. In three narrative poems inspired by "The Rape of the Lock," Laver tells the story of modern young women making their way in libertine London. In "Cupid's Changeling: or The Lady's Mistake," published here for the first time, Consuelo accidentally sleeps with a callow Cambridge graduate, mistaking him for a matinee idol. In "A Stitch in Time, or Pride Prevents a Fall," young Belinda resists the advances of her host by remembering, at the last moment, her crudely mended chemise: "Had it been merely torn, you then might say / That his own fury rent the lace away. / Had it been merely mended, it might be / Your maid had mended it too hastily. / But from your curious botching, I'm afraid, / It will be plain you do not keep a maid." In "Love's Progress, or the Education of Araminta," an artist's model sleeps with a series of bohemian aesthetes on her way to conventional domestic bliss, surrounded by Victorian bric-a-brac. A near-fine copy of a diverting book. Octavo, original blue marbled paper boards, silver paper spine label, uncut. Title page vignette and nine black-and-white full-page illustrations. Light offsetting to endpapers, lightest edgewear. Housed in publisher's slipcase with wear to spine ends.
