[N.p, 1720. Manuscript map, 19 1/2 x 26 inches. Original hand-coloring. Old folds. Early repairs on verso along folds, slight loss at lower corners repaired. Light staining. Good plus. A handsome handcolored map of the island of Saint Domingue, probably executed in the early 18th century. The map is labeled in French, showing the French and Spanish halves of the island, with Turks and Caicos to the north and with an inset of the Isle a Vache, located just off the southeastern peninsula. The Spanish half of the island is very sparsely labeled, unlike the French half which abounds with place names. Watercolor wash has been used to enumerate the topography, showing major hills and rivers, as well as delineation of towns and cities. This map closely resembles a manuscript map of the western half of the island, dated 1715, held by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. (Inventory #: WRCAM51712)
