Vindex Toys (Cast Iron): Distinctive, True to Life, with Correct Eye Appeal
by Thomas, Julian
[32 pp.] "Somewhere in this big world there must be someone who is an authority on Vindex Toys as there are authorities on everything aren't there? Since I've neither run across that person nor have the time to hunt one up, I've taken the liberty of becoming the most authoritative source of information at the moment by virtue of having in my possession one of very few catalogs in existence on Vindex. The piece is not exactly a catalog, is not too impressive and does not do justice to the quality and exactness of the machines which these toys represent. This catalog was made from a large black and white flyer which was blown up so more detail could be obtained. Then the color border was added. The company made sewing machines as their first line of business and toys were never pushed enough to make it a paying proposition. They were well made, a little more expensive than move, and almost all were representative of a popular auto or other machine of the times. Apparently Vindex did not try to move into the highly competitive 5 cents to $1.00 size toys. Their cheapest wholesale price was on the John Deere Engine at $4.00 per dozen.... Other toy companies were selling Model T's same size as Olds and Pontiacs less than half the price. Another toy company was selling an eleven inch long Packard with opening doors and hoods with a cast engine for $12.00 a dozen and Vindex's Victoria Packard did not compare in scale and didn't have the extra play features. It sold for $15.00 a dozen wholesale. Regardless what ever their problems were they did not make toys for long and they are extremely rare."
