Original black & white photographic portrait of Theodore Dreiser by Carl Van Vechten, dated on the verso “November 8, 1933” with “Photograph by Carl Van Vechten” stamped at the lower left corner and with the same blindstamped to the front at the lower right corner. Fine. The photograph is in dark tones and shows Dreiser facing the camera, but looking up slightly to his right. Theodore Dreiser (1871 - 1945) is best known for his novels Sister Carrie (1900) and An American Tragedy (1925) and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930. Carl Van Vechten (1880 - 1964) was a writer and photographer of such well-known artists, actors, and writers as Edward Albee, Marian Anderson, James Baldwin, Thomas Hart Benton, Truman Capote, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Frida Kahlo, Fernand Leger, Henri Matisse, Henry Miller, Gertrude Stein (for whom he served as literary executor), Alfred Steiglitz, Evelyn Waugh, Orson Welles, Richard Wright, and many more.
