Pickets consist of detachments of troops stationed at a distance from the main force or formation, usually at a station in a remote or sparsely populated location, positioned to stand guard against unauthorized intrusions and surprise attacks. This was a popular work which was translated into English in 1827. Reichlin-Meldegg (1766-1838), a member of a prominent southern German family, served in the Bavarian army, and wrote a number of theoretical works on military strategy.
