Hardbound
1851 · London
by Winkles, Benjamin and Thomas Moule et al.
London: David Bogue, 1851. New Edition. Hardbound. G-- (Red leather spine and corners are heavily deteriorated with dust-like powder flaking off; boards are still holding together but barely; interior is much cleaner than covers would indicate, with foxing limited to outermost pages only; text and engravings among text are very clean.). Maroon cloth boards with leather spine & corners, gilt letters on spine, marbled flyleaves, 176 pp., 66 BW engravings. Title on spine: Winkles's English Cathedrals. A single volume in this three-volume set, in the new edition, following the first one in 1842. Provides histories of 13 cathedrals, with terrific corresponding engraved views, including one floor plan each: Lichfield Cathedral (6). Gloucester Cathedral (6), Hereford Cathedral (6), Worcester Cathedral (6), Durham Cathedral (6), Carlisle Cathedral (6), Chester Cathedral (6), Ripon Cathedral (6), St. David's Cathedral (3), Llandaff Cathedral (3), St. Asaph's Cathedral (3), Bangor Cathedral (3), and Manchester Cathedral (6). All engravings are present. A nice book in a not-so-nice-anymore binding. Uncommon.
