London: B. Fellowes, 1852. First Edition. G+/No DJ Pott Octavo [4" x 6 3/8"] 3/4 bound in black calf and royal blue cloth with red morocco text box, gilt text and four raised bands on spine. Evident shelfwear; bumped, rubbed and chipped at corners, along edges and at head and tail of spine. Losses to leather have been concealed with dye. Interesting provenance of this volume: bookplate indicates it was once owned by Algernon Sartoris, husband to President Grant's daughter Nellie; signature on ffep by the hand of Lionel Trilling, noted literary critique. Arnold is considered the third of the triumvirate of great Victorian poets, the others being Browning and Tennyson. First and last few pages a bit foxed, pages age toned but clean. Binding solid.
