Edinburgh: John Grant, 1906. Three volumes, full red morocco, gilt, by Whitman Bennett, New York. Light wear to extremities, but a very good set. Inscribed in volume 1 by the greatest boxing promoter of the day Tex Rickard "to my friend Ray Campbell," signed and dated Chicago, Sept. 10, 1927. Volume 2 is inscribed by Gene Tunney, the world heavyweight champion: "Ray - I know you are going to have lots of fun reading this and I hope you find it interesting," dated Sept. 16, 1927. Volume 3 is inscribed "To My Dear Pal Ray from Johnny Kilbane." Kilbane had been world featherweight champion from 1912 to 1923. This inscription is smudged. With Campbell's bookplate in each volume. (Perhaps it's Ray Campbell, the boxer, from San Francisco, who was active in the early 20th century). These inscriptions date from just before the second Dempsey-Tunney fight, which was held in Chicago on Sept. 22, 1927. (Inventory #: 29502)
