Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1883. First American Edition, first printing, one of 5,120 copies. 12mo, 196pp; + 16pp ads and blank, blue cloth stamped in gold and brown, edges a bit worn, contemporary signature on front flyleaf, but generally a very good copy. This is the sequel to the author's great novel, THE GATES AJAR (1869). While it did not enjoy the same spectacular success of its predecessor, it did enjoy several printings. The author continued her exploration of the nature of God, again arguing that all that is best on earth will be in heaven. Her vision of a merciful, liberal God is continued and expanded. BAL 20917. NAW III, pp. 538-540. Women's Writings, pp. 659-660. Reynolds, FAITH IN FICTION, p. 240. (Inventory #: 6219)
