Harrogate, TN: Lincoln Memorial University, . Hardcover. Edited by John G. Nicolay and John Hay. Complete 12-volume set. Small 4to. Black cloth with gilt spine lettering and decorations. xxxi, 365pp; xv, 368pp; xlviii, 356pp; xvii, 387pp; xxxiii, 371pp; xix, 361pp; lvi, 310pp; liv, 334pp; lxiv, 304pp; xxviii, 356pp; xvi, 380pp; 373pp. Frontispieces with captioned tissue guard, illustrations (some foldouts). Very good. Mild rubbing to spine gilt of all volumes, else uniformly tight, clean and near fine. Not the first edition of this 1905 classic-- but arguably the best! The later "New and Enlarged Edition," which LMU published in different bindings that include a numbered green cloth edition and a leatherette edition. Interestingly, the Boy Rangers of America also published one of these later editions -- and while "Lincoln Memorial University" appears in gilt at the foot of all 12 spines of this set, the bottom of each title page cites Lincoln Memorial University on volumes 1 through 8 only and cites Boy Rangers of America in volumes 9 through 12. This is not a mixed set, however, as all match perfectly and the last four volumes are indistinguishable from the first eight volumes except for the citation at bottom of the title page -- merely a bibliographical mystery. Choice autograph addition: Below the frontispiece portrait of Lincoln together with Nicolay and Hay a small clipped bold signature of John Hay has been tipped; appropriately, it faces the printed tissue guard, which consists of a reproduction of a 1904 Typed Note Signed from Hay, including his facsimile signature. In addition, this set contains one extra-illustration: Tipped into the preliminary leaves of the first volume is an outstanding head-and-shoulders steel-engraved portrait of Lincoln (image size 4" X 5¼"), perhaps the frontispiece from a Civil War-era Lincoln book, since the name of publisher "D. Appleton & Co." appears in fine print on the blank lower margin. An outstanding, dramatic example of the engraver's art, wonderfully nuanced and three-dimensional, as engraved by A.B. Hall of New York (as noted in fine print immediately below image). A superb set of a title most often found only in ex-library form. MONAGHAN 1471 note. (Inventory #: 41084)
