Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Autograph note from the beloved American author of To Kill a Mockingbird, expressing her dissatisfaction with Charles Shields' 2006 biography, Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee, from Scout to Go Set a Watchman. Dated 4 December . Lee writes: "Dear Mr. Meade: Thank you for your most kind letter & pictures. I did so enjoy them. As for the 'portrait,' it was so highly inaccurate as to be worthless. I was unrecognizable even to myself. They will do these things - Sincerely, Harper Lee." Written on both sides of her monogrammed card, with original transmissal envelope. In fine condition. The recipient of the present letter had corresponded with Charles Shields about the accuracy of the biography, on which Charles Shields commented: "I gave her the opportunity to read the manuscript. Instead she called friends and asked them not to cooperate... Harper Lee is a very difficult woman... A genuine portrait would limn the life of a bullying, alcoholic dyke who made it big with a book cobbled together by her editor." Copies of the complete email exchange between Shields and Meade will be provided to the buyer.
