first editionFull leather
by Maurice Hewlett (Valenti Angelo)
New York: The Golden Cross Press, 1937. Full leather. Fine. Valenti Angelo. A pristine copy of this 1937 1st thus, a lavishly-printed fine press offering by the Golden Cross Press, designed, decorated and illuminated by Valento Angelo. #10 of only 175 copies signed by Valenti Angelo at the limitation. This copy is also beautifully bound in a full, rich, gilt-decorated leather by Belle McMurtry Young (1875-1959), the dean of early to mid 20th century Cailfornia bookbinders and one of the leaders of the modern movement of hand binders, whose stamp is at the lower rear dentelle. The pastedowns as well are bound in full, matching leather and the lovely paper endsheets are designed (by Valenti Angelo) in a patterned gilt. Tall quarto, includes a custom-made suede box, which has protected the book very nicely over the years.
