The Messiah. Translated from the German of Mr Klopstock. A New Edition in One Volume.
by Klopstock, [Freidrich Gottlieb].
8vo. Bungay: Printed and Published by C. Brightly, 1808. 8vo, (8), -464 pp., engraved frontispiece and 5 engraved plates occasionally toned. Half calf and marbled boards, backstrip gilt-and blind-stamped with black label. Boards rubbed, marbled paper over edges worn, lower board bumped. Old ownership inscription and shelf number on title page. A good, sturdy copy. Later edition of a prose translation of Klopstock’s epic on man’s redemption, first published between 1748 and 1773, initially in the German weekly Bremer Beiträge. The first ten cantos generated some excitement but interest waned over the many years it took the concluding cantos to appear. Still, even in this edition Klopstock is introduced to the public as having “received from his Messiah the honour of being esteemed the Milton of Germany, and is considered as having completed what that favourite son of the British muse had left unfinished”.
