Los Angeles: Universal Pictures, 1935 & 1936. Original Preview Pass to Universal Pictures for Hollywood Columnist Jimmy Starr Dated Sept. 15, 1934 to Sept. 15, 1935. Signed by Jimmy Starr. Light tan cardstock, 3 7/8” x 2 11/16”. Studio passes were given to press and industry representatives, allowing the bearer access to the studio’s lot and sets. It reads in full: “Universal Preview Pass, Admit Two, To Any Universal Press Preview, Mr. Jimmy Starr [typed in], Representing Publication Herald Express [typed in], Good for Year, Sept. 15, 1934 to Sept. 15, 1935 (To be cancelled [sic] when bearer severs connections with his publication). Note - This pass is good only for previews - Not for any other performance. Authorized by Carl Laemmle, Jr. General Manager, Universal Studios. Signature and address must be written on reverse side of card for identification purposes.” On the verso is Jimmy Starr’s signature and his typed address. With “70” printed on the front of the card. Near fine with a hint of use. Jimmy Starr (1902 - 1990) is best known as a Hollywood columnist, though he was also a writer and actor, known for The Corpse Came C.O.D. (1947), A Night for Crime (1943) and Pink Pajamas (1929). Some of the Universal films Mr. Starr may have enjoyed in that time period include such popular productions as Great Expectations with Henry Hull and Jane Wyatt, Imitation of Life with Claudette Colbert, The Mystery of Edwin Drood with Claude Rains, The Bride of Frankenstein directed by James Whale with Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester, Werewolf of London with Henry Hull and Warner Oland, and The Raven with Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi.
