The letters were exchanged "pending a discussion on the Bible as a divine revelation during the months of July, August, September and October 1873." They were published in columns appearing in the Norfolk Virginian and the Richmond Christian Advocate. The author, Reverend Matthew O'Keefe was an Irish born Catholic priest who served as such for fifty-four years, primarily in Virginia. At the time of his death he was the priest of a Catholic church in Towson MD. He served as a chaplain in the Confederate Army and was close friends with Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis. Following the letters is an appendix "Review and Refutation of a Sermon Etc. Preached by Rev. O.S. Barten" by Rev. O'Keefe. Rev. Barten was a Norfolk church rector and the spiritual advisor to Jefferson Davis during his incarceration at Fort Monroe.Bound in original black cloth with gilt title to front cover.
