R. Penck" written in pencil on free front endpaper. Large 4to and sm. 8vo. Boards. N.p. (Dresden) ca. 1970. Two early notebooks, undated but presumably from 1970 or shortly thereafter, by an artist who has subsequently exerted great influence on contemporary art. A. R. Penck (an alias for Ralf Winkler) was born in 1939 and studied in Dresden in the 1960s with a group of Neo-Expressionist painters and became one of the foremost exponents of the new figuration alongside Jörg Immendorff, Georg Baselitz and Markus Lüpertz. In the 1970s he and his colleagues were considered dissidents in East Germany and were subject to surveillance by the secret police. But by the end of the decade his work was exhibited in West Germany and by the 1980s he had achieved worldwide fame for his paintings with pictographic, neo-primitivist imagery of human figures and other totemic forms, some of which are prefigured in the present notebooks.
