26, (2) pp. manual published by the socialist Peace and Freedom Party in Syracuse, New York, in opposition to Syracuse University's official student orientation handbook, with articles proclaiming and denouncing the university's involvement in military training, war research, and racist employment policies, and familiarizing new residents with local politics and community activism, reproducing a satirical campus map, photos, caricature, and sophisticated cut-up text collage. Offset with spot color printing. 4to. Color illus. stapled self-wrpps. Syracuse, NY (Peace and Freedom Party) n.d. (ca. 1969). At the time of publication, the Peace and Freedom Party was closely associated with the Black Panthers, receiving national attention in 1968 when it nominated Eldridge Cleaver for the US presidency. This handbook is dedicated to Bobby Hutton and James Rector and includes numerous quotes by Panther leaders and other historical radicals (Malcolm X, Eugene Debs, Susan B. Anthony, et al.). The covers and interior double-page collages are remarkably well-designed, combining refined knowledge of graphic and typographic styles and compelling use of word and image. A rare and extremely fine example of the genre. As of May 2014, OCLC locates only one holding. (Inventory #: 47872)
