Three Albums Containing Over 150 Original Photographs Pertaining to Aviation in the First World War
Three albums containing approx. 155 original silver gelatin prints ranging in size from approx. 4" x 3" to 10" x 7 1/2" documenting various activities of fighter, bomber and reconnaissance squadrons, mostly Italian but with some German and other material included. Photographs laid into three later oblong large 4to. boards albums, one with mounted illustration on front cover with the title "Aviazione". N.p., n.d. (ca. 1914-1918). A fine compilation of images including many air-to-ground photographs showing shell and bomb damage, airfields and trench systems, air-to-air images, squadron line-ups, portraits of pilots, aircrews and ground personnel servicing Ansaldo, Caproni and other aircraft, reconnaissance photos with feature recognition pamphlets, some signed photos, downed aircraft including crashed and derelict machines, captured aircraft on public display, etc. Of particular note are a shot of Gabrielle Annunzio with other squadron personnel, a signed portrait of a young Italian aviator, and a rare air-to-air image of a Nieupont Scout engaging a Brandenburg reconnaissance machine.
