Album containing 60 original photographic prints by Baldus, each print approx. 8 1/2" x 11", mounted on heavy stock measuring approx. 12 1/2" x 17", each print with stamped caption, hand printed number (presumably a stock number), and signature of the artist beneath the mount, with images showing streets, panoramas, individual buildings, monuments, and artworks in the city of Paris, most prints in excellent condition and preservation with densely printed blacks and shades of grey, a few of the prints very slightly faded, some minor foxing on a few pages. Oblong folio. Orig. boards album, rubbed in places, expertly restored. N.p. (Paris), n.d. (ca. 1860). A wonderful early album, with prints in unusually good condition, by the renowned photographer and chronicler of Paris and other parts of France. Baldus was born in 1813 in Prussia, originally trained as a painter, and worked as a draughtsman and lithographer before switching to photography in 1849. In 1851 he was commissioned by the Historic Monuments Commission of France to photograph historic buildings, bridges and monuments, many of which were being razed to make way for the grand boulevards of Paris designed by Haussmann. By the late 1850s he had become a towering figure in the nascent field of photography and the present album contains many of his iconic images. Works include a panorama of the city center, a panoramic view of the Seine at the Pont des Arts, Notre Dame, Porte Saint-Martin, Arc du Carrousel, Arc de l'Etoile, Place de la Concorde, S. Vincent de Paule, Colonne de Juillet, Colonne Vendome, Palais Luxembourg, Champ de Mars, Hotel de Ville, numerous shots of the exterior of the Louvre, and many other sites in the city, as well as some decorative sculptures. A rare and notable album. (Inventory #: 48086)
