3 vols. bound in 5 (I.1, 1 vol. text and 1 vol. plates; I.2, 1 vol. text and 1 vol. plates) comprising a complete catalogue of known Etruscan Praenestine cista in museum and private collections, summarizing provenance, the composition and condition of the existing components (lid, handle, feet, body), including exhaustive descriptions of all inscriptions and incised decorations, with annotations, bibliography, and index, followed by a study in German of the cistae's diverse mix of themes and styles, myths and historical narratives, scholarly interpretations of the cistae's use and origin, with notes on workshops and materials, profusely illus. showing all examples and reproducing continuous line drawings of the engraved decorations. 4to. Wrpps., d.j. Rome (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche) 1979-90. The sumptuously decorated cistae were discovered in an Etruscan necropolis at Praeneste, approximately 37 km southeast of Rome, and excavated in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Their unique and complex combination of different technical skills and traditions, as well as decorative and thematic styles, has puzzled scholars. Their precise use and function remain unresolved questions. One later volume on the handles (published in 2001) is lacking in this set. (Inventory #: 47919)
