A single 25 pp. issue of the limited-circulation art and literary journal (the 5th of a total of 12 issues), published by a core group of mostly Portuguese artists, containing poetry by Luiz de Macedo and Pedro Tamen, a photograph by Denise Colomb, and original serigraphs by Manolo Millares, João Vieira, Lourdes Castro, Jan Voss, and Jorje Martins, together with two typed supplemental inserts containing poetry and prose by José Manuel Simões, Mário Cesariny de Vasconcelos, António Ramos Rosa, Manuel de Castro, and Vicente Aguilera-Cerni, 14 serigraphs in total. Large 8vo. Orig. wrrps. with original serigraph to front cover. Paris (Lourdes Castro/René Bèrtholo) 1959. The core members of the KWY artist group, which was founded around the publication of the journal, were the Portuguese artists Lourdes/Lurdes Castro, René Bèrtholo, João Vieira, José Escada, Costa Pinheiro, and Gonçalo Duarte, together with Christo and Jan Voss. Additional contemporary artists and poets also published in KWY from time to time. Lacking a traditional manifesto, the publication of KWY reflects ongoing social and artistic changes while opening up Portuguese art to an international dialogue. The group's first exhibition was held at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes in Lisboa in 1960, and retrospectives were held at other sites in Portugal in 2001 and 2015. (Inventory #: 48384)
