Inscribed by Garland on the front pastedown: "James E. Yeatman from the Author. Hamlin Garland Sept. 27th, 1898." Yeatman, the St Louis banker and one time head of the Western Sanitary Commission, is thanked in the printed acknowledgements, although there is name is spelled 'Yateman.' Portions of the text were serialized in McCLURE'S MAGAZINE. Oddly, at least these days, not a particularly common book when inscribed. (Inventory #: WRCLIT76447)
