Splendid monograph on the buildings and treasures of the Toshogu Shrine, a Japanese temple built in the first half of the 17th century and consecrated to Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the last feudal Japanese military government which existed between 1603 and 1867.
This guidebook to the shrine is iIllustrated with 1 color plan and 30 photo-chromolithographic plates (either one or two images per plate) - all with facing leaves of text in Japanese and English - showing the architecture and details of the buildings, secondary shrines, grounds, gardens, etc.
Moderate rubbing along edges of wrappers. Previous owner's inscription in ink on back cover, at verso of plate 32, and along fore-edge of plate 4. Unfortunately the plate #2 depicting the Cryptomeria Avenue and the Shinkyo (the Sacred Bridge) is missing. Captions in Japanese and English.
