Second edition, first published 1904. Garrett, a banker, was the son of Baltimore banker Thomas Harrison Garrett and nephew of Robert Garrett (1847-96), former president of the B & O Railroad and a trustee of Johns Hopkins University. The elder Robert Garrett was acquainted with Osler through his connections with Hopkins and his membership in the Stultifera Navis (Ship of Fools) book club, “A club of Washington and Baltimore book-lovers . . . which until Osler left in the spring [of 1905] met with enthusiasm once a month and then died.
