The author was director of "Institut des Hautes Etudes de Belgique", an engineer with the Belgian company SOFINA, and the author of several books on number theory and recreational mathematics. During WW II, he emgrated to the United States and taught at the New School for Social Research, New York, returning to Bruxelles in 1946. This text is based upon a course of lectures given at the New School, and is dedicated to the Belgian-American founder of SOFINA, Dannie Heinemann.
