A lively epistolary narrative which records a tour that this adventurous young American made between 24th May and 23 June in 1784. The preface suggest that the work was (lightly) edited by "the celebrated author of M'Fingal" (John Trumbull, 1750-1831) and published at his suggestion. An interest in canals was evidently one of the reasons that Watson made the trip, but what he saw does seem to have made a big impression on him and he went on to champion various US waterways as thoroughfares for trade (including what became the Erie Canal).
