Inside the book are 2 letters typed and signed by James Noel (Indianapolis Law firm) addressed to Miss Lesley R. Payne, 1321 N. Meridian Street, Indianapolis. Ms. Payne was the niece of James Whitcomb Riley. The first letter typed by the Noel Law firm is dated March 22, 1930 and the second letter is dated January 6th, 1931 (includes envelope). The contents of these letters is about payments, an article written for the "Sun", and appreciation for receiving the first copy of an unspecified letter. Another letter included with this book is a signed typed letter, dated February 20, 1930, from the Bobbs-Merrill Company addressed to the Noel Attorney firm. This letter discusses the copyright status of Riley's book "Out to Old Aunt Mary's." In addition to those letters is a personal typed letter on letterhead of "The TPROA Quill, Inc. Frank C. Payne, Editor 55 West 42nd Street New York." The letter is dated November 13th, 1930 and addressed to "Dear Nig:-." The content of addresses Mr. Phelp's book and includes blunt discussion about the depression era business in New York. Quoting the last paragraph - "Business of all kind is simply putrid. The press agents are out of work and their stories are pathetic. Many of them, I mean. Conditions have hardly ever been as rotten as this winter is to be and it behooves all of us to be as stingy and saving as possible. They are springing the book on Mr. Riley's Letters at the very worst possible time, so you can hardly expect the sales to be very lively." The letter ends "Love to Everybody, Frank." "Daddy" is written in blue pen over the typed name "Frank" One of James Whitcomb Riley's letters reproduced in the book was addressed to a young Miss Lesley Payne and appears on pages 311 and 312.
