Allred was the leader of the sect now known as the Apostolic United Brethren, a fundamentalist Mormon group with roots in the Short Creek region. Allred took over following the death of Short Creek "Prophet" Joseph Musser; group members who disagreed with his succession split off to form their own group, which became the FLDS.An outspoken practitioner and advocate of polygamy, Allred was nevertheless fairly moderate when compared to other fundamentalist leaders, and did not encourage isolation from broader society. In 1977, Allred was shot to death by two women acting on the orders of Ervil LeBaron, leader of the Church of the First Born of the Lamb of God-- a breakaway group from the Mexico-based Church of the Firstborn of the Fulness of Time. Throughout the 1970s, LeBaron ordered the killings of numerous prominent fundamentalists, including members of his own family. (Inventory #: 48712)
