In June 1967, Shah Reza Pahlevi made a visit to Berlin. On the 2nd, the Shah attended a performance of The Magic flute at the Deutsche Oper, and a large protest against his visit broke out nearby. The protest soon turned violent due to provoking from the Shah's agents and overreactions on the part of the local police. A local student, Benno Ohnesorg, died during the melee, having been shot by a plain-clothes officer. The 2 June Movement, a non-violent anarchist group in West Germany, was named after the day of the protest and of Ohnesorg's death. (Inventory #: 48523)
