Frontispiece, (ii), xii, 176 pages, 101 tinted plates. Second, and greatly expanded, edition. "Being a comprehensive series of original sketches in various styles of ornament, arranged for application in the decorative and constructive arts" nice copy of an extremely influential design book. The first edition (1856) issued pseudonymously under the name Luke Limner. It was less than half the length of this edition, with only forty-seven plates. "Containing more than eleven hundred distinct and separate'suggestions.'" The text "will be accompanied by above two hundred illustrative engravings, taken from existing examples." This mammoth volume covers the history of ornamental design from Egypt and Assyria to the Victorian era with many examples. With book stamp o London bookdealer "B.T. Batsford," on inside of front board, along with nineteenth century pastedowns from the "Paris Exhibition" and "History of Hum Habitations (second Series) with two pages of manuscript notes.
