Boris Souvarine was an activist, journalist, historian, essayist, and militant Communist. In 1921 he was elected to the first Board of the SFIC (French Section of the Communist International) and to the congress of the Communist International. In 1924 he was expelled from the PCF but continued publishing Communist works, and in 1932 had a role in helping to found the Independent Communist Federation of the East, composed mainly of fellow comrades who had also been ejected from the party.
