The History of the American Episcopal Church, 1587-1883 [Two Volumes]
by Perry, William
James R. Osgood and Company. Hardcover. Boston, 1885. Quarto, red cloth, 665 + 696 pp. First edition. An indispensable history of the Episcopal Church in America. Perry's second major work on the subject, after his Historical Collections Relating to the Colonial Church. " Second only to the Historical Collections is his The History of the American Episcopal Church, 1587-1883, volume 1, The Planting and Growth of the American Colonial Church, 1587-1783, and volume 2, The Organization and Progress of the American Church, 1783-1883 (1885). In both volumes, Perry wrote the first section and then edited a second section consisting of monographs by other writers on Episcopal church history. It is still an invaluable resource. He stressed that the American Episcopal church grew up with the nation and he was an integral part of American history. Perry was a chronicler rather than an interpretive historian. He made an enormous contribution to the history of the Episcopal church by collecting thousands of documents. Later historians could not have done their work without his collections of documents." - ANB. A very good set in original publisher's cloth. Contents excellent, hinges of second volume reinforced with cloth tape and somewhat fragile, bookplates of the Reverend George W. Degraff to front pastedowns. Well preserved overall. . Very Good. 1885. First Edition. (Inventory #: SET3106)
