[AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM ARENDT STEVENS TO GOVERNOR GEORGE CLINTON]
by [French and Indian Wars]: Stevens, Arendt
[Albany], 1746. pp. written on recto and verso of small folio sheet. Very good. Provenance: Frank T. Siebert. Rare letter from an Indian translator to Gov. George Clinton, advising him to join forces with the Mohawk against the French during King George's War. Written in the aftermath of the French and Indian raid on Saratoga, Gov. Clinton's Indian interpreter and advisor seeks to bring Five Nations tribes to the British defense: "I think it most necessary that Aron should go up to the Indians & endeavor to bring them heartily into our Interest & to join us in the war. It is both our & Henrick's opinion that nothing will have a greater weight with them than to have their Houses all joined in one place....If the Assembly agree to this it will be best that Aron go & see this done for as I know he hath most power with them he can prevail best with the Indians....As Aron will go up amongst the Indian he will do all in his power to find out that affair of the Philadelphia Interpreter & everything else your Exellency wants to be informed of but no more than an Indian information of this can be gott how ever true it is...." The letter, likely a retained copy given the cross outs and corrections, continues in response to a letter received after the first part had been written: "...I have with Mr. Barkley's help I believe made a full reconciliation betwixt ye Moquus & Canajorie Indians & they are much pleased to know your Excellency's mind from me...I told them that I intended to go amongst the various nations with a Message from your Excellency with which they seemed pleased...." A fascinating look at the delicate diplomacy between the European powers and the equally powerful tribes that populated the New York, Massachusetts, and Nova Scotia regions in the mid-18th century. This manuscript comes from the famed collection of Dr. Frank Siebert (sold at Sotheby's in May, 1999). SIEBERT SALE 146.
