An uncommon anthology of religious verse, compiled by Frederick George Lee (1832-1902), the prolific author of devotional works, essays, verse, and books on art and architecture. The checklist of Lee's works in the catalogue of the British Library contains 72 separate titles (ODNB), which begins with his poem "The Martyrs of Vienne and Lyons," for which he was awarded the Newgate Prize in 1854. The 43 poems in Lyrics of Light and Life are all original to this volume and include contributinos by John Henry Newman, Christina Rossetti, Aubrey De Vere, and Montgmoerie Ranking. Inscribed on the half-title "To F. W. Cosens, Esq / with the Compliments of / the Editor Frederick George Lee."
