1935 · London
Very rare proof copy, with a number of substantive corrections in MS, of this insetting "fascist distopia" novel, now little-known but praised by Karl Edward Wagner as being one of the 13 best Science-Fiction Horror novels ("The Twilight Zone Magazine, June 1983). The protagonist encounters an inhospitable underworld populated by a lost race of humans who obey without question the totalitarian government of this Hollow Earth. There are long descriptions of the ominous landscapes, and the desperation of the protagonist as he attempts to survive. Clearly this work reflects the political landscapes of Europe during the mid-1930s, and remains a poignant warning of the rise of the totalitarian regimes.
ADDED: TLS from George [Locke], a formidable Sci-Fi bibliographer and owner of Ferrett Fantasy Ltd (London, 1982) to the buyer Stuart D[avid] Schiff, Sci-Fi scholar, founder of the influential horror and fantasy magazine "Whispers," editor of "Mad Scientists: An Anthology of Fantasy and Horror" (1980), and many other works. His own bibliography on the Internet Speculative Fiction Database lists more than 100 entries. See: http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?10591 (Inventory #: 1719)
