Printed letterpress with historic metal types at the Shaker Press, Sabbathday Lake, Maine.A compilation telling the story of the first printer at the Chosen Land Shaker Community, Deacon James Holmes. Holmes came to the Community in 1783. When he was in his 80s he received some cases of printing type, so he built a press. With it he printed seed packets for the Shaker garden seed industry, as well as broadsides and books of farming wisdom.This edition is limited to 200 copies of which this is number 29. Bibliography. The illustrations are based on Shaker gift drawings. Many fold-out pages detail Deacon James' many print projects, and there is a facsimile seed pack filled with real Mangelwurtzel seeds.A fine copy, and quite rare.
