Toront: Hunter, Rose, & Co, 1895. Three volumes. Portraits. Green publisher's cloth, gilt stamped. Boards moderately rubbed, slight damstaining to boards of volumes two and three. Corners bumped, spine ends and hinges slightly worn. Some tanning, but otherwise clean. About very good. Begg, a Scottish immigrant to Canada, served in a variety of civil service posts in Canada and Scotland, and eventually settled in British Columbia in 1887. He authored a number of histories about western Canada, the present work being the most comprehensive. It follows Canadian history from early explorations of North America and the expeditions of Champlain to the investigations of Hudson's Bay in the 1880s and the development of the western provinces and territories in the 1980s, with detailed sections on the fur trade, the Red River settlement, the Canadian Pacific Railway, and other topics.
