Wraps
White Plains
by Hogan, Walter V., Editor.
White Plains: The Daily Reporter. Wraps. Fine. N.d., circa 1937. Folio, 41.5 by 28 cm. 48 pp. A compilation of appealing photographs of the finer buildings and landmarks of South Central Westchester County when it was an uniformly affluent suburban retreat from the city. The homes depicted range from the well-kept modest residence to grand mansion, with the preponderance the latter, or closer to that end of the spectrum. Many of these sprawling homes were located in White Plains, where some of them still stand but as anyone familiar with the area knows, generally-speaking not the community of choice for the wealthy. There are also sprawling homes shown from Scarsdale, which has obviously maintained its upscale status, yet very few from say Purchase, which both then and to this day is an area known from its estates. Other buildings include schools, churches, country club clubhouses, hospitals, office buildings, etc. Also parkways and parks. In general, anyone from Westchester will recognize a good number of the structures and views shown, with some more or less the same today, while others are modified almost beyond recognition. And the comparison is part of the fun for Westchesterites! This publication was a promotional brochure in its essence, and whatever impact it may have had on the urban exodus, its objective was surely achieved, and then some, following the Second World War, with the development it was encouraging also undoing some of the beauty and charm that it was highlighting. The short text pieces give brief town info and histories. The brochure was issued in conjunction with the publishing newspaper's 20th anniversary. Copies at the New York Historical Society and Columbia. No other copies located on OCLC First Search.
