by (Gingerbread, Croquettes de Riz, & Boiled Cheese).
[U.K. 8vo (16 cm, 6.3"). [140 (53 used)] pp.. ca. 186475] Useful collection of culinary and medicinal recipes, recorded in what seem to be at least two different hands both very legible as well as printed clippings. The recipe section opens with instructions on curing bacon and ham, but the majority of the other recipes are dessert- or drink-oriented: gingerbread, cider cup, lemon pudding, almond cheese cakes, ginger wine, chartreuse of gooseberries, and "Lèché Cream a Spanish," in addition to a handful of savory items such as boiled cheese, croquettes de riz, mulligatawny soup, and dressed lamb's head. The home remedies include Jones' chilblain liniment, a cure for whooping cough, and the final handwritten item in the volume: henbane, laudanum, and camphorated chloroform to be taken in equal quantities, with the concoction titled (in a different hand) "Mr. Shobb's remedy for Neuralgia (?)" The front pastedown and free endpaper have almanac leaves for 1848 affixed; two of the recipes are dated 1864 and 1875. A recipe for cold arrowroot pudding from Mrs. Ritchie of Brighton is laid in, and the back pastedown and free endpaper have a sponge cake recipe affixed.
Contemporary faux marbled vellum with clasp (intact and functional); darkened and moderately rubbed overall with front hinge (inside) tender. Varying degrees of foxing. => Much interesting content here.
