by California Binding. Hammer, Victor. Milton, John.
Slim folio. Florence: Stamperia del Santuccio, 1931. Slim folio, pp. Later designer binding of full blue crushed morocco extra, upper cover with onlays of black and orange morocco, moiré silk endpapers, backstrip with onlay of orange morocco lettered in gilt (gilt slightly rubbed), enclosed in a quarter orange morocco box lettered on the backstrip as the book. Internally very fine. Limited to 95 copies of which this is #51. A Hammer masterpiece and one of a few books he printed in folio, this was the first book from the press and is very scarce. One copy at auction since 1975 -- no copies located through the trade. Almost certainly bound by Stephen Gail Herrick in San Francisco: Herrick was a keen amateur binder who used Peter Fahey’s studio to create some pleasant if somewhat unskilled but creative bindings on the fine press books he loved to collect. Another possible candidate is Duncan Olmsted, good friend of Herrick’s and likewise an amatuer binder of fine press books in the style often called “loving hands at home”. (Inventory #: 107767)
