London: William Heinemann , 1923. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good . 4to. 29 by 22.5 cm. 50 plates, with nine devoted to the personifications of England, France and Germany through the 19th century up to 1923. Also a good many caricatures, sixteen in all, are of figures from then an earlier time -- the 1870s. In between these two sections are the usual mix of celebrities, literary, political, royalty, and more cerebral send-ups of ideas and abstractions. As usual, Beerbohm's arch-nemesis is mocked, but so are Aldous Huxley, H. G. Wells, Frederic Manning, etc. All the drawings have the inimitable Beerbohm style that remains fresh and droll, even when one doesn't necessarily know the subject or fully know what exactly Beerbohm intended to skewer. Captions on tissue guards. Slight sunning of the spine.
