Document Signed, " two pp, 4to, Chicago, March 21, 1924
by RAINEY, GERTRUDE 'MA' (nee Gertrude Malissa Nix Pridgett)
Our Document is a Royalty Agreement between the Chicago Music Publishing Company and Rainey for a song titled "Ma Raineys [sic] Dream Blues," which she wrote and composed. Rainey agrees to sell, assign, transfer, deliver, "the original musical composition," which she wrote. The agreement assigns monies to her for reprinting the music and "mechanical reproduction" of her composition. She signs on the lower portion of the second page in a large hand, "Gertrude Rainey." In August of the year Rainey signed our agreement, she recorded the eight bar blues number "Shave 'Em Dry" and, in the course of the same year, went on tour with her Wild Cats Jazz Band debuting at Chicago's Grand Theater on State Street. Between 1923-28, when Rainey first signed a contract with Paramount Records, she recorded almost 100 records with some of the best contemporary musicians. Normal aging to pages, two horizontal folds on each page. Manuscript material of Rainey rarely becomes available. (Inventory #: 4241)
