Philadelphia: Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr., 1879. unbound. Map. Lithograph with original hand coloring. Image measures 11.25 x 14". This lovely map of the Wyoming Territory was issued by Mitchell in 1879. It shows the five original territorial counties, towns, rivers, roads, lakes, railroads, mountains, and other features. The Sioux and Shoshone Indian reservations are labeled. Issued just 2 years following the Great Sioux War of 1876-1877, the map depicts the region following the conflict. After gold was discovered in the region, settlers began to encroach upon the ancestral lands of the Native Americans, leading to a conflict between the Sioux and Northern Cheyenne Indian and the U.S. Army. The Sioux were eventually forced to occupy the Sioux Reservation lands while the Northern Cheyenne were driven south, eventually leading to the Northern Cheyenne Exodus of 1877-1888.The map is in good condition with minor foxing.
