first edition Hardcover
1871 · Boston
by SEEMULLER, Anne M. Crane
Boston: James R. Osgood, 1871. Hardcover. Good. First edition, first state. Blind embossed and ruled burgundy cloth, gilt-stamped spine. Contemporary owner's name (C.M. Eakin) inked and penciled on preliminary pages, pages modestly soiled, rear hinge cracked, spine faded and cocked with extremities worn, thus a good only copy. This is Seemuller's third book. The writer Alfred Habegger claimed Henry James plagiarized Seemuller's work after her passing and that the protagonist of this novel, Christie Archer, was the inspiration for *The Portrait of a Lady* by Henry James. Exceptionally scarce first edition.
