After receiving his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Channing became the first professor of obstetrics and medical jurisprudence at Harvard. Subsequently, he was named dean of Harvard Medical School. With the present book, he aimed to provide strong evidence of the safety of obstetric anesthesia for both mother and child.
